Athens, GA

Another college town. This one like most seem to be run by football fever. It's everywhere and it's a bit of a turn off for me. Not sure I could last too long. Anyway another day in another town. This demo got rained out after about 5 mins. Here's my offering, a nice wood door and some rain.

See ya in S. Carolina.

Ohio river and river thoughts

In louisville on the 22nd floor the Galt hotel which sits right on the southern bank of Ohio, I had an amazing view of that river and that city. The river was probably a half mile there and made me dream of exploring it. I was on the outside bend and the logs, small boats and incredibly long barges would navigate past the curves, bridges and past my view.
The scene had me wanting to spend a month navigating the river myself exploring the bends the shallows and depths the cities and the wilderness. There is some wilderness out here. But I can't explore so can I just come home.

Quail Botanical Gardens

Parker and I spent a few hours at Quail on Monday and had so much fun. We usually just head right for the "Seeds of Wonder" garden, which is targeted to toddlers and which is totally entertaining for him. But this time we walked through the main gardens to the newer children's garden, which is targeted to older kids but still lots of fun for him. Even better, the children's garden was practically deserted since school was back in session, so we had the place to ourselves! It was mostly a cool, cloudy day, so we didn't get too hot. This garden has a huge treehouse, an area with building blocks (where we sat on the ground and spent a lot of time making huge towers), a "mountain stream" with plastic boats for racing, and a raised vegetable garden. We saw lots of lizards, and found this butterfly lounging on the ground in the veggie garden (hopefully he was just "resting" and wasn't injured or sick...). I seized the opportunity to get a quick pic of Parker with the butterfly on his hand--that's usually not an easy feat! On the way back to the car we walked through a few different areas of the main garden, checking out awesome succulents and the huge waterfall in the "tropical rainforest" area. A great day.

Knoxville

Walking around some dark streets in a business area I came across this and then a bunch of good restaurants. Tofu spinach okra cheese and almonds sandwhich. New Belgium beer. Lucky me.

31 Weeks

Little Bass Pro

I'd say this was the best $2.99 we spent on the trip...sweet.

Deathly Hot Desert Drive

We had a seriously hot drive out to Lake Powell--we were so traumatized by the heat! Every rest stop bathroom break was like being tossed into an oven on the side of the freeway. Actually, it helped keep us pretty entertained throughout the day and evening, constantly checking on the temperature and trying to guess how and when it would change. I'm pretty sure it never got below 85 or maybe even 90 throughout the night that we spent in Mesquite. Luckily, it cooled down by our second day in Lake Powell and we didn't suffer too much :)

Dance-a-Thon

The glow sticks that we brought on the camping trip for Parker were a huge hit! We have promised ourselves that these must become a regular part of all night-time family/kid events. On this particular night, he had spent most of the evening after dinner dancing like a crazy person on the beach; by the time it was dark, we made him a "glow stick suit" that looked awesome (although I think it still needs about 50 more glow sticks added to it)! Parker definitely prefers crazy, noisy, fast music--so we found him the perfect song to do his glow stick dance to...I was seriously laughing hysterically by the second song--it brought tears. Needless to say, he was absolutely exhausted by bedtime.

Bass pros

P and p walking out of Bass Pro Shops after a wonderful shopping experience. We stopped here again on the way out to Lake Powell. The temps just after leaving Las Vegas got as high as 111ยบ F.

Funny Sleeper

Nap time today...

Life-Sized Lego Guy

Met this giant 25,000-piece Lego Stormtrooper on our trip to Toys-R-Us today (while looking for some blow-out sale summer items to bring along to Lake Powell for fun)...Parker touched him gingerly a few times just to confirm that he really WAS made out of Legos!

Countdown to Lake Powell

We had ordered some items on Amazon for our up coming trip. One of those items was a tube containing 100 glow sticks. Parker had me tracking the package from Maryland on my computer for a couple nights until they arrived. 100 sounds like an awful lot for one kid but let me tell ya, these are Not just for Parker.
